Artist: Nerida Thompson

ARTIST BIO

Nerida was born in Campbelltown near Sydney in 1951 back in the days when it was still rural.  Although she has always been involved in creativity and photography she was in her 50s before she took up painting. It is her passion for nature and the natural world that finally triggered her desire to capture not only what she saw but the feeling of a place.  Although her first love is for landscapes, and particularly seascapes, she has also developed a love of abstracts working mainly in Acrylic medium and also with mosaics.

Nerida now teaches painting, although in her words, “I really teach to observe how nature works”, and runs an art group in Diamond Valley. She has organised and participated in an art exhibit and has been commissioned to paint a number of works including a mural for a local playgroup. She has sold a number of paintings and has work hanging in a couple of public buildings.

From the Artist

I always thought that painting was beyond my capabilities as my a ability to draw is not great. It was during my two trips to Africa that I first realised that in using acrylics I don’t have to get it right the first time. After my second trip I decided to give up my photography business and take up painting classes. As a photographer I could capture a scene perfectly but as a painter I can capture the essence of a place. Although some of my paintings are of a particular place many are a concept of scenery.
